Soaring food prices hit table

This is a time when older generations reflect on the good old days, when milk was just a few cents per gallon and eggs sold for a dime a dozen.

Now, when you go to the grocery store, you feel like you should check for holes in your wallet.

Federal economists warn the situation will worsen. Average prices for dozens of goods - bread, macaroni and, eventually, meat - will continue their ascent, increasing nearly 4 percent this year and exceeding the general rate of inflation.

Several factors are driving up the price of food, but growers cite a few primary culprits.

Prices for corn and wheat are hitting record highs and fuel costs are upward bound. Together, these factors push up the cost of raising an animal, and eventually affect the price of meat, poultry, dairy goods and items containing corn meal, starch or corn syrup.

The surge is sending quakes through the food chain. Everyone from the field to the table is affected - the farmers who produce dairy goods, meat and poultry; suppliers and restaurant owners whose livelihoods depend on customers eating out; and grocery shoppers.
